Your comprehensive resource for the sacred pilgrimage
Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam and the largest annual pilgrimage in the world. It is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims who are physically and financially able to make the journey at least once in their lifetime.
Hajj takes place during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah. Pilgrims from all corners of the world gather in Mecca to perform a series of rituals that commemorate the trials of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), his wife Hajar (Hagar), and their son Ismail (Ishmael).
Hajj represents unity, equality, and submission to Allah. It is a profound spiritual experience that cleanses the soul, forgives sins, and strengthens the bond between Muslims worldwide. The pilgrim emerges from Hajj as if reborn, with all previous sins forgiven.
Hajj is obligatory upon every Muslim who meets the following conditions at least once in their lifetime.
The person must be a Muslim
Must have reached the age of puberty
Must be of sound mind and understanding
Must have enough wealth to cover Hajj expenses and support family during absence
Hajj is not obligatory for those who would undergo excessive hardship or danger to reach it, or for those whose financial means are barely sufficient for their basic needs and their family's essential expenses during their absence.
The five essential pillars of Hajj that every pilgrim must perform during the pilgrimage.
The sacred state of purity entered into at specific miqat points. Pilgrims don the simple white garments of Ihram, symbolizing equality and humility before Allah.
Circumambulation of the Kaaba seven times counterclockwise, starting from the Black Corner (Hajr al-Aswad). This represents the spiritual journey around the house of Allah.
Walking or running seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa, commemorating Hajar's desperate search for water for her son Ismail.
Spending the day of the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah at Mount Arafat in prayer and supplication. This is the most essential pillar of Hajj.
Completing the pilgrimage by shaving or trimming the hair, symbolizing renewal and the casting off of sins. This marks the end of the sacred state.
There are three main forms of Hajj, each with different rites and requirements.
Single Pilgrimage
Performing Hajj independently, entering Ihram from the designated miqat point specifically for Hajj. This is the most straightforward form of Hajj.
Combined Pilgrimage
Performing Hajj with a single Ihram for all rites, entering Ihram from the miqat and completing all pilgrimage requirements together. A sacrificial animal is offered.
Enjoyable Pilgrimage
Most common form. The pilgrim enters Ihram for the initial rites, exits Ihram, then enters Ihram again for the Hajj rites. A sacrificial animal may be required.
